Preakness 2011

Friday, May 20, 2011

Lance Armstrong has found himself in a familiar situation today after former teammate and close friend Tyler Hamilton told CBS news show 60 Minutes that he saw Armstrong injecting himself with blood-doping drug EPO, which boosts the human body's ability to produce red blood cells, thereby increasing the person's endurance significantly.
Of course, Hamilton is hardly the first former racer to accuse the seven-time Tour de France winner of cheating his way to greatness and glory; former teammate and former Tour champion Floyd Landis also accused Armstrong of cheating, and French newspapers seem to have made an annual habit of accusing Armstrong of doping.
What should we make of Hamilton's claims?
In all honesty, it's tough to say for sure, but it's clear that these accusations have the potential to do much more damage to Armstrong than some of the others. Hamilton was one of the closest racers on the pro circuit to Armstrong during his career, and if anyone would have known the longtime champ was cheating, it would have been him.
If you watch the interview, though, Hamilton's behavior is a bit off. He looks down and to the right constantly and has difficulty maintaining eye contact with the interviewer throughout the discussion. Was he lying? It's hard to say, but we're sure to hear more of this story as Armstrong's grand jury trial progresses.
If that's not enough to whet your sports appetite, the Preakness Stakes 2011 is just over 24 hours away, and plenty of questions surround Kentucky Derby champion Animal Kingdom. With another wide-open field, can the horse deliver the second piece of the Triple Crown puzzle, or will he leave us without a winner of the troika of races for another year?
Finally, there's LeBron James, who is fresh off another dominant performance in Game 2 against the Chicago Bulls. The superstar was held to just 15 points in Game 1 but dropped 29 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and dished out five assists in Game 2. Has he figured out the Bulls defense, or was this just a one-time performance?
In other words, it's shaping up to be a wild day in the sports world.
