Cabinet Ministers

Wednesday, May 18, 2011

Prime Minister Stephen Harper will unveil his new cabinet Wednesday.
Despite obtaining a majority mandate, the Conservatives lost several key cabinet ministers on election day May 2 and Prime Minister Stephen Harper must fill six portfolios that were left vacant as a result of ministers retiring or being defeated.
Reporters will gather outside Rideau Hall early Wednesday for a sneak peak at who will be part of Harper's new team. The prime minister's spokesperson, Dimitri Soudas, confirmed the announcements will begin at 11: 15 a.m.
Two of the most-watched postings to be awarded are foreign affairs and Treasury Board.
The former was left vacant after Lawrence Cannon lost his Quebec riding to the NDP, and Stockwell Day left the other up for grabs when he decided not to seek re-election.
It's possible that current government House Leader John Baird will move up to Treasury Board - a position he has already held - now that Harper no longer needs someone to navigate the choppy waters of a minority government. Baird's name and that of Immigration Minister Jason Kenney have also been touted as possible successors to the foreign affairs post.
It's expected that Jim Flaherty will stay on as finance minister.
