Kung Fu Hustle is one of my favorite movies, not because I am a hardcore fan of Stephen Chow, but because I liked the wild mix of comedy, adventure, thriller, action adventure and martial arts. Particularly noteworthy is the excellent fight choreography by the legendary Yuen Woo-Ping (also responsible for the fight scenes of Kill Bill Vol 1, Fearless, The Matrix, Hero). Like I said, I love Kung Fu Hustle and I am very happy with his result in 2008, so forgive me if I am a bit biased. (I will do my best not to lose objectivity)
The new ones are "AXE KICKING EDITION" soon to be published by Sony is actually the Hong Kong Region 3 version I have. (I'm sure) The liberation of Hong Kong is not complete, because if you have a multi-region DVD players. For almost sure that fans of the film in this new edition will be interested, I'll skip the summary of the plot. (Read For those of you who have not seen it, you can have my review in the original U.S. DVD.)
I will get straight to the difference between the previous version and the new DVD "Axe-kicking issue" (original Hong Kong version):
Soft front spoiler
Scene 1, accused the owner of her husband from the window and drops a flower pot in the back of his head over. The original cut showed a small puddle of blood from his face, but the U.S. version of the digital, has been omitted. The blood is now a part of the film.
Scene 2; Heckles Sing and insult the residents of Pig Sty Alley and gets hit in the stomach of a woman. The original cut showed Sing spitting blood that landed on his face, but the former U.S. version digitally removed the blood (though some still appeared around Sing mouth). The blood is now in this press release.
Scene 3, which may be offensive to others but is on the eve of the big attack on Pig Sty Alley. Hong Kong cut showed a man, ad-p on a piece of paper as the camera pans around, but the American version eliminates digital excrement offensive. Now the document is no longer a virgin. "Mr. Poo" makes its appearance!
Scene 4; Sing confronts "The Beast" in the casino, hit hard in the chest twice. After the success of the second spraying blood in the face of the animal and Sing is to move water the rear shock absorbers shown with blood from his mouth. The U.S. version has already made two consecutive shots.
Level 5, also at the casino, is singing head beaten in the face pinned to the ground by the animal. After the first shot, as the bloody fist animal on the floor in slow motion ... But the U.S. version removed this shot entirely.
Now to the DVD picture and sound quality
Anamorphic Widescreen 2.35. The image is very strong with solid black levels. The colors are natural and not noticeable improvement. CGI effects suffer a bit of sweetness. However, the transfer is clean and pleasant. The handover of Hong Kong from, I can say.
The sound is in 5.1 surround Dolby/2.0 in English, French and Cantonese. I am a bit disappointed by Sony, the Cantonese 5.1 DTS track as in the original Hong Kong. Why?
EXTRAS: Stephen Chow interview-Bloopers/outtakes-Featurettes: w / Yuen Woo-Ping, Oliver Wong (Production Designer), Shirley Wong (Costumes)
Storyboard comparison trailer, audio commentary
CONCLUSION: Kung Fu Hustle is one of the most entertaining imports (if not the most fun in 2004). Combine mixture of pop culture, comedy on the top, strong action, maintaining a deep respect for the spirit of Kung Fu. This region is the new version is a little confusing because it contains the original cut of the film, it lacks the unique and powerful special Cantonese DTS track. I would not advise a "double dip" for fans, the first region of the DVD itself, but also for fans who will not own the film, this new version. However, the lack of DTS has big minus for this version. I prefer the original version of Hong Kong region-3!
RECOMMENDED! (Provisional)
I do not know what to expect when I went to see "Kung Fu Hustle" movie, but I'm a big fan of foreign films in China and it is understood that exceeded all expectations. It is a gangster movie, like you've never seen before in the 1930s. La Banda del Hacha wear and costumes, fantasy, black, and after killing some enemies early in the credits of the film breaks down the "iron fist" gangsters do a funny dance in unison was not parallel to laugh like. In that moment I knew it would be an interesting movie, and I was right. Legends inhuman forces from unlikely people, an overwhelming superiority of the Axe Gang and pride being afraid of the "bad-ass" must be for his life. In exchange, rent a number of assassins to kill an entire people, but their attempts are futile, because the population includes only the small farmers and housewives ... I enjoyed every moment of "Kung Fu Hustle" (according to Looney Toons "Kill Bill") and on each of the Out Guide for foreign films, weird, how intelligent and creative, but as complete. The subtitles do not bother me that I think most Chinese films, the best in the original language of the verses that are horrible in English called (eg House of Flying Daggers).
